This day, our Community honored all who have served our country. It was an emotional day filled with memories and beauty. The Veterans Day Celebration was a special event to be shared with all.
Early in the day down at the riverfront on the Green River, Veterans and friends gathered to prepare for a balloon launch later in the day, in memory of those we have lost.
At 11:00 A.M., George Rhodes welcomed all in attendance at the City Building, formally the Armory. The presentation of colors was provided by the MCHS JROTC. Wayne Morris sang the National Anthem. There was recognition of Veterans in attendance with Daven Edmonds playing the Service Hymns of each of the US Military groups.
The MCHS JROTC presented a beautiful tribute to all POW/MIAs. Cadet CPT Ted Morton provided information on the significance of how the POW/MIA place settings at the table:
"I have been given the privilege and honor to introduce and acknowledge this table in remembrance of all the prisoners of war, missing in action, and killed in action. From all American involvement in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, the Persian Gulf, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and more.
Many have looked at this table and wondered...Let me explain. This table is set for five, representing the frailty of prisoners against their oppressors.
Remember, the table is round to show our everlasting concern for our missing men.
Remember, the table cloth is white to represent the purity of our soldier's intentions to respond to their country's call to arms.
Remember, the candle is placed in the center of the table to represent the families of loved ones, who kept the faith, waiting the return of ones so dear to them.
Remember, the red ribbon tied so prominently around the candle is reminiscent of the red ribbon worn upon the lapel and breast of thousands who bear witness to their unyielding determination to demand a proper accounting of our missing.
Remember, the lemon upon the bread plate is to remind us of the bitter fate.
Remember, a pinch of salt on the bread plate is symbolic of families’ tears as they still wait.
Remember, the glasses are inverted to symbolize their inability to share this afternoon's toast.
Remember, for all of you who have served with them, called them your brothers and sisters, depended upon their might and aid, and relied on them, remember them, for surely they have not forgotten you."
After the beautiful presentation, all deceased veterans passing this past year were named and honored. The Guest Speaker was David James, Major U.S. Army, Retired, who is no stranger to McLean County. The Major explained “Freedom is not free” He told many stories but also provided relevant and current information relative to all U.S. Military Groups. Wayne Morris sang "God Bless the U.S.A." and Ronnie Dame offered a blessing for all Veterans and for our dinner.
After a enjoying a fine meal, all proceeded down to the riverfront to welcome the parade elements including the MCHS JROTC, the MCHS Band, escorted by the Livermore and Island Volunteer Fire Departments.
As the rain started to fall, Taps were sounded by Steve Riggs, after which the balloons were launched. A beautiful and respectful day.......
Much appreciation to the Sponsors of the Veterans Day Celebration:

Thunder on the Green, a Kentucky Drag Boat sanctioned event, attracts more than 2000 people each year. It is presented by The Kentucky Drag Boat Association (KDBA) and you can contact the KDBA at (270) 763-2833 or you can check their Web Site at www.kdba.net where you can find all of their latest news. This 2-day event is scheduled this year on the weekend of August 25-26, 2018. The KDBA has entered into an association with Lucas Oil to participate in the Lucas race series. Thunder on the Green is now included in Lucas Oil's list of points races. All Lucas Oil racers must compete in at least four races throughout the year in order to be considered for the annual championship.
At Thunder on the Green, boats race down a track set up on the Green River at Livermore between the Main Street and RV Park boat ramps. The boats take off from the Main Street Ramp and exit at the RV Park ramp. The name of the event comes from the intense roar of the engines echoing across the Green River.
Boats compete in classes based on how fast they can complete the race. Classes range from 6-second boats, meaning the boat crosses the finish line only six seconds after leaving the starting line, to 12-second boats. Racing classes are from QE through PWC. The boats race at speeds of up to 170 mph.
The $10 armband covers both days of racing and includes entry into the pits. Accompanied children, 12 and under are free.
August 25th there will be time trials for all participants on the Green River beginning at 10:00 am.
August 26th the KDBA will begin the boat races at about 11:30 am.
Hope to see you all there!
